Bob Thirsk to Spend 6 Months on ISS

25 May

Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk will be heading for the International Space Station on Wednesday as the First Canadian flight engineer in a Soyuz crew. Leaving from Kazakhstan, Thirsk will live in space with six months.

The Ottawa Citizen has a nice story on this mission. It points out that after 25 years as a Canadian astronaut, Bob Thirsk is still not a household name in Canada. I actually got to meet Bob Thirsk in 1999 – completely by accident. I was working at an Ottawa Chapters bookstore and he was browsing the magazine rack. I recognized him and started a conversation. He was taken aback, very humble and told me that it was the first time he’d been recognized in public!
